□ Dr. Gyeongjoon Yoo, Commissioner of Statistics Korea attended the 48th session of the United Nations Statistical
Commission (UNSC) held at the UN Headquarters in New York on March 7th to 10th in 2017. Commissioner Yoo also
took part in the High-Level Forum on Official Statistics during this visit.
□ The UNSC is the highest body of the global statistical system, whose annual session is one of the biggest gatherings of
the chief Statisticians from 160 nations and international organizations. The commission sets the standards for
statistical production, data utilization, etc. and makes decisions to provide the statistical support regarding globally
important matters ranging from the economy and the environment to trade and health.
□ Commissioner Yoo, who had served as Vice Chairman of the UNSC in the preceding year, was re-elected in the office by
the unanimous support of the member states*. He also lead Korea’s membership in the UN Economic and Social
Council, exercising his vote for adopting each agenda item of the meeting.
□ During his trip, Commissioner Yoo had a number of bilateral meetings with the delegates from key partner organizations
to exchange views on the cooperation mechanisms for statistical development, and to seek for opportunities to expand
the Official Development Assistance (ODA) in statistics.
* 24 nations are elected to be the members of the UN Economic and Social Council where Korea, along with China, Japan,
and Qatar, is representing the Asian region from 2016 to 2019.
