□ Dr. Hwang Soo-kyeong, Commissioner of KOSTAT, attended the 49th session of the United Nations Statistical
Commission (UNSC) held in at the UN Headquarters in New York on March 5th to 9th in 2018. Commissioner Hwang
also took part in the High-Level Forum on Official Statistics during this visit.
□ The UNSC is the highest level of international statistical gathering where chief statisticians from 160 member states and
international organizations consult and make decisions concerning the measurement standards and methodologies
at the international level. A wide range of topics including economics, environment, population, health and other
global issues are covered in the meeting.
□ Representing Korea’s membership* in the UN Economic and Social Council, Commissioner Hwang exercised a vote for
each of the 17 decision making agendas during the session.
○ In addition, on behalf of the korean government, the Commissioner voiced opinions regarding the matters that are of
importance to our national strategic directions, such as the increase of job opportunities and the use of big data. She also
expressed Korea's intention to make contributions to the international society by sharing our experience and transferring
the associated technologies.
* The membership is elected in the UN Economic and Social Council. Korea, along with China, Japan, and Qatar,
is representing the Asian region in the council from 2016 to 2019.
□ A number of bilateral meetings with key partners took place during this visit. Commissioner Hwang had discussions with
the delegations from the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, and Eurostat exploring ways to collaborate in areas of mutual
interest. In addition, the Commissioner urged for active participation of the partners for the 6th OECD World Forum
scheduled to be held in Incheon, Korea on November 26th until 29th, for the successful outcome of the forum.
