□ Statistics Korea (Kostat, headed by Commissioner, Yoo Gyeongjoon) has signed the second memorandum of understanding with Statistics Centre Abu Dhabi (SCAD, headed by Director General Butti Al Qubaisi) at the UN headquarters in New York on March 10th. This second MOU was done in response to the Korean government’s drive to enhance the cooperation with the Middle East.
□ Kostat has improved its statistical ties with SCAD since the first MOU in 2012 in the areas of register-based census methodologies, utilization of administrative data, and sharing practices in Household Income and Expenditure Survey using electronic household ledger book. SCAD highly recognized Kostat’s advanced statistical level and strongly expressed its intention to continue statistical cooperation with Kostat. In consideration of the advantages from the continued cooperation as well as Abu Dhabi’s status within the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Kostat has made a decision to sign the MOU again.
□ With this second MOU, the two organizations are planning to strengthen the statistical cooperation activities with a focus on the joint technological cooperation projects related to the current statistical issues such as big data and sustainable development goals (SDGs). This MOU is expected to greatly contribute to the statistical development of the two organizations through the vibrant partnership.
□ Commissioner Yoo Gyeongjoon said, ”Abu Dhabi, UAE is the central base of the Middle East. This MOU between the two statistical organizations is anticipated not only to play a key role in enhancing the practical cooperation in the statistics area but to contribute to the amicable relationship between Korea and the Middle East.”
