|Title||Bilateral Meeting for Statistical Cooperation with Statistics Bureau of Japan(SBJ)|
Since establishing the first bilateral relation on statistical cooperation in 1982, Statistics Korea (KOSTAT) and the Statistics Bureau of Japan have continued statistical cooperation activities including mutual visits and hosting bilateral meetings.
The 58th bilateral meeting was held in Japan this year between March 12-17 with the main agendas of the consumer price index, administration statistics and statistical publications.
The head of the KOSTAT delegation, Mr. EUN Sunhyun, Director General of the Statistical Data Hub Bureau, made courtesy visits to senior officials of the Statistics Bureau of Japan where both parties agreed to continue and further develop a cooperative relationship between the two agencies.
Ms. Seico NODA, the Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications(MIC) of Japan has kept in mind the quote, “Read the numbers and then think about the policies”, for the past 25 years, and has said that this line of reasoning was fundamental to her rise to the minister of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications
Moreover, with the emergence of an inequitable and disadvantageous distribution of wealth, opportunities and other essentials necessary for the well-being of citizens, - which is the next major policy issue given the social changes resulting from the low fertility rate and an aging population- both parties recognized the increasing importance of statistics and made a commitment to continuing their statistical cooperation.
In addition, Mr. Masata CHINO, Director General of the Statistics Bureau of Japan, pointed out that he is closely paying attention to Korea’s Register-based Census as Japan’s next challenge will be on the use of big data, and he expressed his interest in collaborating in these areas.
Furthermore, the KOSTAT delegation met with Mr. Hiroe TSUBAKI, President of the National Statistics Center(NSTAC), and assured us that he would maintain a friendly and cooperative relationship with KOSTAT.
