1. Deaths and crude death rates ○ The number of deaths was 246,942 persons in 2009, which rose by 829 persons (0.3 percent) from 2008. ○ The crude death rate marked 497.3 persons in 2009, which fell by 0.9 person (0.2 percent) from 2008. 2. Deaths and death rates by sex and age ○ The death rate for males in 2009 was 553.7, which decreased by 0.9 percent from 2008. The death rate for females was 440.7, which decreased by 2.3 percent from 2008. ○ The death rate for those in their thirties grew 6.9 percent from 2008. The death rate for those aged 10 to 19 grew 5.5 percent from 2008. ○ The death rate for those aged 80 or more dropped 6.1 percent from 2008. The death rate for those aged 1 to 9 fell 3.1 percent from 2008. 3. Leading causes of death ○ The ten leading causes of death were malignant neoplasms, cerebrovascular diseases, heart diseases, suicides, diabetes, transport accidents, chronic lower respiratory diseases, liver diseases, pneumonia and hypertensive diseases. These ten causes of death occupied 70.9 percent of all deaths. ○ The death rate for suicides and pneumonia increased by 19.3 percent and 15.2 percent, respectively. The death rate for cerebrovascular diseases and diabetes decreased by 8.0 percent and 5.1 percent, respectively. ○ Transport accidents were the leading cause of death for those aged 1 to 9. Suicides were the leading cause of death for those aged 10 to 39. Malignant neoplasms were the leading cause of death for those aged 40 or more. 4. Infant mortality ○ The number of infant deaths was 1,415 persons in 2009, which declined by 165 persons from 2008. ○ The infant mortality rate (the number of infant deaths per 1,000 live births) recorded 3.2 in 2009, which dropped by 0.2 (6.2 percent) from 2008. 5. Perinatal mortality (provisional data) ○ Perinatal deaths (infant deaths of less than 7 days and fetal deaths of 28 weeks of gestation or more) were 1,503 in 2009. ○ Perinatal mortality rate in 2009 was 3.4 deaths per 1,000 live births plus fetal deaths. 6. Maternal mortality ○ The number of maternal deaths (the death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy) was 48 people. The maternal mortality ratio marked 10.8 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births. 7. Suicide ○ The number of suicide deaths was 15,413 persons in 2009, rising 2,555 persons from 2008. ○ The suicide death rate was 31.0 deaths per 100,000 population, up 19.3 percent from 2008. ○ 20.8 percent of all suicides occurred in May and June. This percentage was 11.8 percent higher than the average suicide rate between 2004 and 2008. 8. Alcohol-induced death ○ The number of alcohol-induced deaths was 4,430 deaths in 2009. The alcohol-induced death rate recorded 8.9 deaths per 100,000 population, falling by 0.5 death (5.1 percent) from 2008. ※ For more information, refer to the attached file. |
