- As of November 1st, 2015, the centenarians, who were 100 years old or more, amounted to 3,159 persons. The number of centenarians was 6.6 persons per 100,000 population - As for the number of centenarians by province, Gyeonggi showed the highest figure of 692 persons. As for the number of centenarians per 100,000 population by province, Jeju showed the highest figure of 17.2 persons. - The largest share of Koreans aged 100 or more cited a strict diet as the secret to their longevity, which was followed by a regular daily life and optimistic attitudes. - Centenarians who lived with other family members accounted for 44.6 percent of the total centenarians. Whereas, centenarians who lived in nursing homes for the elderly occupied 43.1 percent of the total centenarians. - The largest share of centenarians was taken care of by paid care givers at 48.2 percent, which was followed by family members (45.6 percent). - 68.2 percent of centenarians exactly knew their own name. - As for chronic diseases that lasted for 3 months or more, the largest share of centenarians suffered from dementia, which was followed by hypertension and osteoarthritis. - As for health care methods, a strict diet occupied the largest share, which was followed by a regular daily life and exercise. - 76.7 percent of centenarians abstained from alcohol all their life. 79.0 percent of centenarians abstained from smoking all their life. - The share of male centenarians who managed health care was higher than the female counterparts. The share of male centenarians who felt happy was higher than the female counterparts. - On average, centenarians met children residing in other regions, neighbors, etc. 4.7 times per month. ※ For more information, refer to the attached file. |
