□ As of the end of 2011, the number of establishments in the service sector (11 industry sections) was
2,487 thousand establishments, which rose by 3.4 percent or 83 thousand establishments from the previous year.
The number of workers grew by 3.1 percent or 282 thousand persons to 9,382 thousand persons. The annual
sales increased by 8.3 percent or 107 trillion won to 1,395.9 trillion won.
○ The number of establishments went up by 23.4 percent from 2001. The number of workers grew by
44.7 percent from 2001. The annual sales increased by 128.6 percent from 2001.
□ In spite of overall economic slowdown, the proportion of annual sales in 'Wholesale and retail trade' recorded an
increase due to the favorable trend in chemicals, refined petroleum products, iron and steel, and motor vehicles.
○ The proportion of annual sales in 'Professional, scientific and technical activities' and 'Human health and social work
activities' showed a downward trend compared to the previous year due to the increase in the proportion of
annual sales in 'Wholesale and retail trade'. In the long term, the proportion of annual sales in
'Professional, scientific and technical activities' and 'Human health and social work activities'
showed an upward trend.
