Complete Enumeration Results of the 2017 Population and Housing Census [ Population ] - As of November 1st, 2017, the population of South Korea was 51,420 thousand persons. The population of the Seoul Capital Area accounted for 49.6% of the total population of South Korea. - Compared to 2016, Sejong showed the highest population growth rate, which was followed by Jeju and Gyeonggi. - The working age population aged 15 ~ 64 showed a drop for the first time. In the meantime, the proportion of the elderly population aged 65 or more increased to 14.2%. - The foreign nationals in South Korea amounted to 1,480 thousand persons, which occupied 2.9% of the total population. This figure rose by 70 thousand persons (4.6%) compared to 2016. [ Household ] - In 2017, the number of households totaled 20,170 thousand households, increasing by 330 thousand households (1.7%) from 2016. - In 2017, 1-person and 2-person households occupied 55.3% of the total households, up 1.3%p from 54.0% in 2016. - The median age of household heads recorded 51.7 years. The share of female household heads stood at 30.6%, showing an upward trend. - Households with the elderly aged 65 or more occupied 26.5% of the total general households. Households consisting of only the elderly occupied 12.2% of the total general households. [ Housing ] - As of November 1st, 2017, the number of housing units totaled 17,120 thousand units, rising by 430 thousand units (2.6%) compared to 2016. The number of apartments was 10,380 thousand units, which occupied 60.6% of the total housing units. - In 2017, housing units of 20 years and older amounted to 7,970 thousand units, which occupied 46.5% of the total housing units. This figure increased by 340 thousand units from 2016. - On average, 2.83 persons resided in apartments with floor area of 75.8㎡ and of 16.4 years. Their mean age recorded 38.6 years. - The largest share of household heads aged 40 ~ 49 (61.0%) resided in apartments. As for floor area by age of household heads, household heads aged 50 ~ 59 recorded the largest floor area (79.0m2). ※ For more information, refer to the attached file. |
