908,000 population enumeration districts (EDs) established by dividing the national agricultural area into unit size of 2ha or less. Field data collection takes place in about 21,500 joint sample EDs and 4,800 main production site sample EDs.

Designated as designated statistics on May 29, 1967.
Samples were designed in 1973 and an existing administrative survey was replaced by a sample survey in 1974.
Samples were redesigned to reflect the changes in agricultural basis in 1985. The sample was used from 1987.

The sample size was reduced from approx. 39 thousand to approx. 26 thousand in 2008. The survey unit was changed into m2.
The Crop Cultivation Area Survey was separated from the Crop Production Survey on Jan 1, 2010, and then combined with the Agricultural Area Survey, resulting in the title change to the Agricultural Area Survey.
A remote research method was used for the Agricultural Area Survey from 2012.
