1. Major indicators

The number of enterprises was 10,786, dropping by 1.1 percent compared with the previous year.

- The number of enterprises in Post and Telecommunications increased, while that in Mining & Manufacturing, Wholesale & Retail Trade, and Service Industry decreased year-on-year.

The number of regular workers totaled 2,946,607 people, up 2.1 percent compared with the previous year.

Annual sales (excluding Financial Institutions and Insurance) amounted to 1,221 trillion won, growing 6.4 percent compared with the previous year.

- Annual sales in most industries increased, except for in Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries decreased.

Ordinary income (excluding Financial Institutions and Insurance) amounted to 76 trillion won, which fell 4.4 percent compared with the previous year.

- Ordinary income in Wholesale & Retail Trade, Real Estate, and Renting & Leasing, Service Industry and Construction increased, whereas that in Mining & Manufacturing, Electricity and Gas, Transportation, and Post & Telecommunications decreased.

The number of subsidiaries totaled 11,430, up 13.3 percent compared with the previous year.

2. Multiple business activities of enterprises

1) Rate of enterprises with speciality in Manufacturing and Service Industry

The number of enterprises in Manufacturing totaled 6,216 in 2006. Out of them full-time enterprises in Manufacturing amounted to 4,581, which decreased by 5.3 percent compared with the previous year.

Enterprises with speciality in Manufacturing accounted for 73.7 percent, while  enterprises with a side job in Manufacturing occupied 26.3 percent. As for  enterprises with a side job in Manufacturing, Manufacturing excluding their main business accounted for 24.1 percent, followed by Wholesale & Retail Trade, and Restaurants (1.4 percent), Service Industry (0.5 percent), and Others (0.3 percent).

Increase in the rate of enterprises with speciality: Other Transport Equipment, Refined Petroleum Products

Increase in the rate of enterprises with a side job: Recycling, Motor Vehicles and Trailers, Non-metallic Mineral Products, etc.

The number of enterprises in Service Industry totaled 1,710 in 2006. Out of them full-time enterprises in Service Industry amounted to 1,312, which decreased by 2.2 percent compared with the previous year.

Enterprises with speciality in Service Industry accounted for 78.1 percent, while enterprises with a side job in Service Industry occupied 21.9 percent. As for enterprises with a side job in Service Industry, the other Service Industry excluding their main business accounted for 18.1 percent. Wholesale & Retail Trade, and Restaurants occupied 0.9 percent. Manufacturing occupied 1.0 percent. Others accounted for 1.9 percent.

Increase in the rate of enterprises with speciality: Education, and Business Support Services

Increase in the rate of enterprises with a side job: Maintenance and Repair Services, Research & Development, Sewage and Refuse Disposal, Sanitation and Similar Activities, etc.

3. Domestic and overseas subsidiaries

The number of enterprises with domestic subsidiaries amounted to 2,532, up 13.4 percent compared with the previous year.

The number of domestic subsidiaries amounted to 6,259, up 15.9 percent compared with the previous year.

The number of domestic subsidiaries per enterprise was 2.5, up 0.1 compared with the previous year.

The number of enterprises with overseas subsidiaries amounted to 2,212, up 13.1 percent compared with the previous year.

The number of overseas subsidiaries amounted to 5,171, up 10.3 percent compared with the previous year.

Location of overseas subsidiaries: 71.2 percent of overseas subsidiaries were located in Asia (43.2 percent in China). 14.8 percent and 9.7 percent of overseas subsidiaries were located in North America and Europe, respectively.

The number of overseas subsidiaries per enterprise was 2.3, down 0.1 compared with the previous year.

4. Research & development

The number of research & development enterprises was 5,280, an increase of 2.2 percent compared with the previous year.

The expenditures on research & development amounted to 21 trillion won, a rise of 2.1 percent compared with the previous year.

The ratio of research & development to annual sales was 2.1 percent, down 0.1 percentage point compared with the previous year.

The percentage of enterprises that carried out research & development for themselves was 87.2 percent, up 1.5 percentage points compared with the previous year.

The expenditures on research & development per enterprise recorded 4.1 billion won, down 0.1 percent compared with the previous year.

The enterprises in Mining & Manufacturing which carried out research & development occupied 74.8 percent of the total research & development enterprises, up 2.7 percent compared with the previous year.

5. Intellectual property ownership

Patents: The number of enterprises with patents amounted to 3,488, up 18.4 percent compared with the previous year. The number of patents recorded 231,440 cases, up 24.5 percent. The percentage of enterprises that developed patents for themselves was 86.5 percent, down 4.5 percentage points.

tility models: The number of enterprises with utility models amounted to 2,605, up 13.5 percent compared with the previous year. The number of utility models recorded 95,484 cases, up 8.1 percent. The percentage of enterprises that developed utility models for themselves was 46.3 percent, up 1.8 percentage points.

Designs: The number of enterprises with designs amounted to 1,182, up 21.1 percent compared with the previous year. The number of designs recorded 42,940 cases, up 25.4 percent. The percentage of enterprises that developed designs for themselves was 92.5 percent, down 2.6 percentage points.

Trademarks: The number of enterprises with trademarks amounted to 2,869, up 19.8 percent compared with the previous year. The number of trademarks recorded 164,046 cases, up 16.8 percent. The percentage of enterprises that developed trademarks for themselves was 85.6 percent, up 2.2 percentage points.

6. Business strategies

Outsourcing and e-business

The enterprises that outsourced their work stood at 73.0 percent, the same as the previous year.

- Outsourcing areas: Security and cleaning services (47.0 percent), transport (34.4 percent) and accounting services (18.1 percent)

The enterprises utilizing e-business systems stood at 46.0 percent.

- E-business area: Enterprise Resource Planning System (77.4 percent) and Customer Relationship Management System (13.0 percent)

Future plans of franchising enterprises

4.2 percent of enterprises introduced the franchising system.

59.4 percent of franchising enterprises planned to expand their franchising. 36.0 percent of franchising enterprises planned to maintain their franchising. 2.8 percent of franchising enterprises planned to reduce their franchising. 1.7 percent of franchising enterprises planned to stop their franchising.

Overseas expansion

29.8 percent of enterprises expanded their business abroad.

3.5 percent of enterprises planned to extend their business abroad.

- Method of overseas expansion: Opening branches or factories (4.9 percent), corporational investment (2.1 percent), and transfer of enterprises (0.1 percent)

New business project

8.5 percent of enterprises planned to launch a new business project.

- New business fields: 53.5 percent of enterprises planned to launch a new project in Mining and Manufacturing, followed by Service Industry (20.5 percent) and Wholesale and Retail Trade (12.0 percent).

Strategic alliance

15.1 percent of enterprises planned to enter into strategic alliances, down 1.4 percentage points compared with the previous year.

- Enterprises to form an alliance with: 47.1 percent of enterprises planned to enter into strategic alliances with domestic enterprises in the same field of industry, followed by overseas enterprises in the same field of industry.

- Method of strategic alliance: technological alliance (41.5 percent), joint marketing (34.4 percent), and joint development of technology (24.3 percent)

Performance-based compensation system

898 enterprises provided stock options, up 10.9 percent compared with the previous year.

1,395 enterprises introduced the employee stock ownership system, up 7.3 percent compared with the previous year.

7,263 enterprises introduced the annual salary system, up 3.9 percent compared with the previous year.

5,671 enterprises provided performance-based bonuses, up 12.4 percent compared with the previous year.

7. Profits Structure

1) Annual sales and ordinary income

Annual sales per enterprise marked 115.5 billion won, a rise of 7.6 percent compared with previous year.

Ordinary income per enterprise marked 7.1 billion won, a drop of 3.3 percent compared with the previous year.

- Operating profits per enterprise recorded 6.7 billion won, a drop of 5.7 percent from the previous year.

The ratio of ordinary income to annual sales stood at 6.2 percent, down 0.7 percentage points compared with the previous year.

- The ratio of operating profits to annual sales stood at 5.8 percent, down 0.8 percentage points from the previous year.

81.4 percent of enterprises recorded surplus, which fell by 1.7 percentage points compared with the previous year.

2) Ordinary income of enterprises recording surplus and deficit

As for the ratio of ordinary income to annual sales, the number of enterprises recording surplus was 8,603, whereas the number of enterprises recording deficit was 1,969.

- Ordinary income of enterprises recording surplus was 10,331 million won per enterprise.

- Ordinary income of enterprises recording deficit was -6,740 million won per enterprise.

3) Labor share and gross value added per employee

Gross value added per enterprise recorded 24.9 billion won, up 4.6 percent from a year ago.

Gross value added to annual sales was 21.5 percent, down 0.7 percentage points compared with the previous year.

Labor share stood at 45.8 percent, up 2.1 percentage points compared with the previous year.

Gross value added per employee marked 96 million won, up 1.5 percent compared with the previous year.
