In 2008, the life expectancy for males aged 40 was 37.9 years. This figure was 6.4 years shorter than the life expectancy for females aged 40 (44.4 years).

- 42.7 percent of husbands referred to the 'national pension' as the way to prepare for their old ages. 31.3 percent and 25.6 percent of wives referred to 'deposits and savings' and 'private pensions' as the ways to prepare for their old ages, respectively.

8 out of 10 husbands thought that they should tie the knot. In the meantime, only 6 out of 10 wives were positive about tying the knot.

- 34.6 percent of husbands spent weekends or holidays watching TV or videos (including DVD). 31.9 percent of wives spent weekends or holidays doing household chores.

- In more than half of the dual income households, wives were in charge of 'taking care of children when children were sick' and 'helping children study'.

In 2006, 65.3 percent of husbands were positive about females having a job. In 2009, 81.5 percent of husbands were positive about females having a job.

As for consumption expenditures of dual income households, the share of 'education', 'transportation' and 'eating out' expenditures was higher than the share of non-dual income households. The employee income of dual income households was 1.6 times higher than that of non-dual income households.

As for the divorces by duration of marriage, the number of divorced couples who had lived together for '20 years or more' occupied 13.5 percent in 1999, recording the smallest share. In the meantime, the number of divorced couples who had lived together for '20 years or more' occupied 22.8 percent in 2009, the second largest share. The divorced couples who had lived together for '0 to 4 years' occupied the largest share.

- In 2009, 46.6 percent and 14.4 percent of divorcees referred to 'disharmony in character' and 'economic problems' as the reasons for divorce, respectively.

Major Characteristics by Age Group

1. Thirties or under

90.5 percent of married couples in their thirties or under spent weekends or holidays for leisure activities with their families, which marked the highest percentage.

* 78.0 percent of married couples spent weekends or holidays with their families.

71.2 percent of married couples in their thirties or under watched cultural, artistic and sports events (including movies and concerts), which recorded the highest percentage. 50.5 percent of married couples watched cultural, artistic and sports events.

* The percentage of couples watching cultural, artistic and sports events: Thirties or under (71.2 percent) > Forties (59.0 percent) > Fifties (39.9 percent) > Sixties or more (17.7 percent)

42.6 percent of married couples in their thirties or under thought that 「child raising support for dual income households and single parent households」 was the most urgent and necessary welfare service. 25.0 percent of married couples thought that 「child raising support for dual income households and single parent households」 was the most urgent and necessary welfare service.

* The percentage of couples who thought that child raising support for dual income households and single parent households was the most urgent and necessary: Thirties or under (42.6 percent) > Forties (23.7 percent) > Fifties (17.1 percent) > Sixties or more (9.2 percent)

2. Forties

Dual income households occupied 48.1 percent of married couples in their forties. This percentage was followed by 43.1 percent of married couples in their fifties and 38.9 percent of married couples in their thirties or under.

19.9 percent of married couples in their forties took part in voluntary work, which marked the largest percentage.

* The percentage of dual income couples who took part in voluntary work in 2009: Forties (9.9 percent) > Fifties (6.5 percent) > Thirties or under (6.1 percent) > Sixties or more (2.2 percent)

As for leisure facilities, 7.9 percent of married couples in their forties favored 'golf resorts' the most. 7 out of 100 married couples in their fifties favored 'golf resorts' the most. 3 out of 100 married couples in their thirties or under favored 'golf resorts' the most.

* The percentage of married couples in their forties who used leisure facilities: Tourist attractions (50.0 percent) > Spa resorts (27.0 percent), Beaches (27.0 percent) > Forest resorts (23.2 percent) > Amusement parks (19.3 percent) > Swimming pools (16.0 percent) > Ski resorts (8.2 percent) > Golf resorts (7.9 percent)

3. Fifties

17.8 percent of married couples in their fifties traveled abroad for the past one year, recording the highest percentage.

* Purpose of overseas trips for the fifties: Sightseeing (79.7 percent) > Business (18.7 percent) > Housekeeping (11.7 percent)

** The percentage of married couples who traveled abroad for the past one year: Fifties (17.8 percent) > Thirties or under (15.3 percent) > Forties (14.9 percent) > Sixties or more (11.9 percent)

58.4 percent of married couples in their fifties spent weekends or holidays watching TV or videos, which followed by 'taking a rest' (44.3 percent), 'doing household chores' (36.2 percent), 'taking part in social networking activities' (20.0 percent) and 'participating in religious services' (18.3 percent).

* The percentage of married couples who took part in religious services on weekends or holidays (multiple responses): Fifties (18.3 percent) > Forties (17.6 percent) > Sixties or more (15.8 percent) > Thirties or under (13.4 percent)

49.4 percent and 7.3 percent of married couples in their fifties would favor 'trips' and 'sports activities' in their free time, respectively, if they had enough time and money.

4. Sixties or more

74.1 percent of married couples in their sixties or more said that they or their spouses paid the cost of living. 20.7 percent said that their children or relatives supported the cost of living. 5.1 percent said that government and social institutions supported the cost of living.

* In 2009, 19.9 percent of married couples in their sixties or more lived together with their children while the cost of living was paid by them (including spouses).

28.3 percent of married couples in their sixties or more lived with their children. As for the reasons for living with children, 31.2 percent thought that it is because their children can't live independently. 26.0 percent thought that it is because they want to live together even though they live independently.

* 71.7 percent of married couples in their sixties or more didn't live with their children. As for the reasons for not living with children, 33.1 percent thought that it is because to live apart from their children is more comfortable. 26.9 percent thought that it is because they can live independently. 19.6 percent referred to 'children's job or studies' as a reason for not living with children.

As for the toughest problems that married couples in their sixties faced, 41.8 percent mentioned 'economic problems'. This percentage was followed by 'loneliness·a sense of alienation' (1.5 percent in 2007 → 1.8 percent in 2009) and 'inhospitality from family members' (0.2 percent).
