With low birth rates and the aging of the population, the percentage of households without children and one-person households will exceed that of households with children in 2030.
According to ’Household Projections by Household Composition and the Number of Household Members’ released by Statistics Korea, households with children (including single parent households) are estimated to reach 9,386,863 households in 2010, which occupies 54.7 percent of the total households. And households without children and one-person households are projected to record 6,290,987 households in 2010, which accounts for 36.7 percent of the total households.
However, households with children are expected to record 9,040,758 households in 2030, down 346,105 households or 3.7 percent compared to 2010. Households without children and one-person households are estimated to reach 9,084,233 households in 2030, up 2,793,246 households or 44.4 percent compared to 2010. The share of households with children will stand at 45.5 percent in 2030, down 9.2%p from 2010. Meanwhile the share of households without children and one-person households will mark 45.9 percent in 2030, up 9.2%p from 2010.
On the other hand, as the population aging proceeds at an unprecedented rate, one-person households (aged 60 and older) in 2030 will increase more than two times compared to 2010.
