      Purpose
      • To investigate the characteristics of national economic activities such as employment and unemployment
      • To provide basic data for macroeconomic analyses and establishment of human resource development policies by measuring labor supply, employment structure, usable labor hours and degree of human resource utilization
      • To provide basic data required for establishing and evaluating employment policies by the government

      History
      • 1957:「Labor Force Survey」produced by the Statistics Bureau, Ministry of Internal Affairs through local administrative organizations
      • Jul. 1961: The survey was carried out by the National Bureau of Statistics, Economic Planning Board
      • Aug. 1962: The survey title was changed to the「Economically Active Population Survey」and the test survey was conducted by specialized surveyors
      • Jun. 1962: Approved for the production of statistics
      • Mar. 1963: Interviewing methods used (15 items) with plural questionnaires (plural persons surveyed per 1 questionnaire) per each quarter in accordance with sampling survey method by the National Bureau of Statistics, Economic Planning Board
      • 1969: Sample revision by designing multi-purpose samples among enumeration districts of the 1966 Population Census
      • 1972: Sample revision
      • 1977: Sample revision
      • Jan. 1980: Expanded survey items to 25 in order for multi-purpose analysis of data by using singular questionnaire (singular person surveyed per 1 questionnaire)
      • 1982: Sample revision
      • Jul. 1982: Survey periodicity changed to monthly basis and singular & plural questionnaires simultaneously used in order for prompt the understanding of trend in changes of employment structure
      • Jun.1983: Overall revision of questionnaires in order to make improvements on insufficient areas according to the recommendation by the ILO
      • Jan. 1985: Unified questionnaire into singular type
      • Jan. 1987: Upwardly adjusted survey objects from people over the age of 14 to of 15 due to the improvement in national income and rate of middle school education to be higher than 99%, and produced unemployment rate for farming houses non farming houses with seasonal adjustments
      • Jul. 1988: Expanded sample households (17,500 → 32,500 households) (sample revision), and data production by province
      • Oct. 1989: Announced quarterly data by province from the 3rd quarter
      • Dec. 1990: Conducted the Economically Active Population Survey by the Statistical Survey Bureau, Statistics Korea
      • 1992: Sample revision on the basis of the results of the 1990 Population and Housing Census
      • Jun. 1994: Adjusted seasonal data according to Population Projections (1989 ~ May 1994) on the basis of the 1990 Population and Housing Census
      • Jan. 1998: Sample revision on the basis of the results of the 1995 Population and Housing Census, questionnaire revision to produce the OECD standard unemployment rate and secondary indices, and announced monthly data by province
      • Jan. 1999: Introduced survey system using computers (CAPI, Computer Assisted Personal Interviewing) after 3-month investigation period (Oct. ~ Dec. 1998) to uplift promptness and to prevent error in data input
      • Jul. 1999: Adjusted seasonal data according to Population Projections (Jan. 1991 ~ May 1999) based on the 1995 Population and Housing Census, expanded seasonal adjusted data of the employed and unemployed, announced rates and number of working people with the job seeking period of 4 weeks (Jun. 1999 ~ )
      • Nov. 1999: Revision of questionnaires in order to make improvement in the areas of people who have given up on job seeking, such as the number of economically inactive population
      • Jan. 2003: Sample revision on the basis of the results of the 2000 Population and Housing Census, seasonal data adjusted according to the application of the multiplier by age group and Population Projections (Jan. 1991 ~ Dec. 2002) on the basis of the 2000 Population and Housing Census, changed from DOS input method to Windows based input program, questionnaire revised to classify employment hours into the categories of main and side jobs
      • Jan. 2004: Changed from CAPI using laptop computers to PDA method and administered rotational sample management system to relieve the gap between new and old systems according to the burden of respondents and overall sample revision
      • Oct. 2004: Changed collection unit from thousand to hundred and adjusted data after Jan. 2003 into the unit of hundred
      • Jan. 2005: Revised questionnaires (revised phrases, separated between child raising and house work among selective items and added the item of physical and mental disorder for clearer meaning of survey items) and introduced rotational sample management system
      • Jul. 2005: Changed official unemployment rate production basis from 1 week of job seeking period to 4 weeks
      • Jan. 2006: Conducted the survey with sub categories of occupations and revised questionnaires by separating between bereavement and divorce, etc. in the category of marital status
      • In Sep. 2007, the sample has been changed to 32,000 households, using the results of the 2005 Population and Housing Census.
      • Jan. 2008: Revised questionnaires and introduced Computer Assisted Self Interviewing (CASI)
      • Jul. 2009: Introduced Computer Assisted Telephone Interviewing (CATI)
