Private Education Expenditures Survey of Elementary, Middle and High School Students in 2023

- The total private education expenditures of elementary, middle and high school students recorded 27.1 trillion won in 2023, which rose by 1.2 trillion won (4.5%) from 2022. - The private education participation rate stood at 78.5% in 2023, up 0.2%p from 2022. The weekly participation hours marked 7.3 hours per student in 2023, which grew by 0.1 hour from 2022. - The average monthly private education expenditures per student recorded 434 thousand won in 2023, rising by 5.8% from 2022. The average monthly private education expenditures per participation student recorded 553 thousand won in 2023, rising by 5.5% from 2022. - The average monthly private education expenditures on general subjects amounted to 326 thousand won per student in 2023, rising by 5.3% from 2022. The average monthly private education expenditures on general subjects amounted to 518 thousand won per participation student in 2023, rising by 5.7% from 2022. - The higher household income level, the higher education expenditures. - 'Dual income households' recorded the highest private education expenditures. - As for the average monthly private education expenditures, the share of students spending 700 thousand won or more stood at 22%, up 2.9%p from 2022. - As for the private education of general subjects by purpose, 'Makeup for classes' occupied the highest share. As for the private education of artistic and physical skills by purpose, 'Hobbies, culture and development of talent' occupied the highest share. - The after-school program participation rate stood at 41.0%.
