Private Education Expenditures Survey of Elementary, Middle and High School Students in 2022

- The total private education expenditures of elementary, middle and high school students recorded 26 trillion won in 2022, which rose by 10.8% from 2021. The private education participation rate stood at 78.3% in 2022, up 2.8%p from 2021. The weekly participation hours marked 7.2 hours per student in 2022, which grew by 0.5 hours from 2021. - The average monthly private education expenditures per student recorded 410 thousand won in 2022, rising by 11.8% from 2021. The average monthly private education expenditures per participation student recorded 524 thousand won in 2022, rising by 7.9% from 2021. - As for the average monthly private education expenditures per student of the total students by grade, 1st grade students in high school recorded the highest figure of 491 thousand won. As for the average monthly private education expenditures of the participation students by grade, 1st grade students in high school recorded the highest figure of 706 thousand won. - As for the average monthly private education expenditures, the share of students spending 700 thousand won or more went up by 3.3%p from 2021. - The average monthly private education expenditures on general subjects amounted to 310 thousand won per student in 2022, rising by 10.2% from 2021. The average monthly private education expenditures on general subjects amounted to 490 thousand won per participation student in 2022, rising by 6.5% from 2021. - As for the private education of general subjects by purpose, 'Study in advance' and 'Preparation for higher school level' showed a year-on-year increase. Whereas, 'Makeup for classes' showed a year-on-year decrease. As for the private education of artistic and physical skills, 'Hobbies, culture and development of talent' and 'Child care, etc.' showed a year-on-year increase. - The higher household income level, the higher education expenditures and the participation rate. - The after-school program participation rate stood at 36.2%.
