Purpose of Establishment

"As a central government organization for statistics, the Statistics Korea aims at prompting services of overall planning and coordination of national statistics, establishment of statistical standards, production & distribution of various economic and social statistics, processing & management of statistical information and provision of various statistical data."

    Mar. 1, 2022 To strengthen non-face-to-face surveys, the Remote Survey Team was newly established. After the re-allocation of statistical work responsibilities of each division, the General Division for Regional Statistics and the International Statistics Division were abolished.

    Jul. 1, 2021 The International Statistics Team was newly established to systematically carry out statistical diplomacy works. In the Statistical Research Institute, the Policy in Statistics Team was newly established to strengthen statistics-based policy support by carrying out research for the improvement and development of major policy-related statistics.

    Feb. 25, 2020 The Policy Support Division and the Statistics Coordination Division were abolished. And the Economic Statistics Coordination Division and the Social Statistics Coordination Division were newly established to streamline coordination activities of national statistics. The functions of Statistics Korea were revised to strengthen data hub functions. The Strategy Performance Team was abolished and the Intelligent Information Management Team was newly established.

    Jul. 16, 2019 The Deputy Director General for Short-term Economic Statistics was established to strengthen the analysis of short-term economic statistics. The Short-term Household Income and Expenditure Statistics Division was established to expand the provision of household economy-related statistics.

    Feb. 26, 2019 Gangwon Local Office of Statistics and Sejong District Office of Statistics were newly established to meet demand for regional statistics.

    Dec. 26, 2017 KOSTAT established a dedicated team (Strategy Performance Team) to strengthen customer-oriented sustainable performance and performance-oriented management.

    Feb. 28, 2017 To strengthen the coordination and standardization of regional statistics, develop regional income statistics, manage the provision of statistics to international organizations and strengthen the development of administrative statistics, some divisions are newly established, and functions and officials are rearranged among divisions.
    <3 divisions (General Division for Regional Statistics, Income Statistics Development Division, Short-Term Agriculture and Fisheries Statistics Division) are newly established. The Population Census Division and the Register-based Census Division are merged.>

    Sep. 25, 2015 The Statistics Korea revised and reinforced its organization to cope with changes in statistical environment and provide policy-tailored statistical services through convergence and analysis of linkage between statistical data and other various data.

And the Statistics Korea operates affiliated agencies including the Statistical Training Institute, the Statistical Research Institute, 5 Regional Offices of Statistics and 34 District Offices of Statistics.
    March 23, 2013 According to the guideline on government reorganization, the team system was abolished. 4 teams were promoted to Spokesperson, Statistical Standards Division, Regional Accounts Statistics Division and Geospational Information Service Division. Performance Management Team and Information Technology Service Team were transferred to Planning and Budgeting Officer and Informatics Planning Division, respectively.
    • The KOSTAT consists of 1 director general, 5 bureaus, 4 officers and 30 divisions in the headquarters. And the KOSTAT operates the Statistical Training Institute (2 divisions), the Statistical Research Institute (3 divisions), 5 Regional Statistics Offices and 49 Branch Offices.
    June 2011 The KOSTAT strengthens the statistical production system by using administrative data for accurate and timely statistical production. The Administrative Data Policy Division, the Administrative Data Management Division and the Register-based Census Division are newly established. And the KOSTAT reinforces the contingency plans.

    Jan. 01, 2010 To strengthen the capacity of statistical production, functions were partially adjusted among Survey Management Bureau, Economic Statistics Bureau, Population & Social Statistics Bureau, and Informatics and Service Bureau. As more and more administrative data were used for statistical activities, information security-related responsibilities were reinforced. In addition, some operational problems were improved.

    Nov. 20, 2009 Survey items of national statistics were merged to reflect economic reality and survey titles were changed. To improve the functions of statistical education and strengthen the functions of research and development of statistical techniques, human resources would be exchanged and utilized between KOSTAT and two affiliated institutes.

    Feb. 2009 The name, location and administration area were changed according to the revision of local statistical organization into the current 5 Local Statistical Offices. Therefore, the Statistics Korea consists of 1 office, 5 bureaus, 4 officers, 23 divisions and 7 teams in the headquarters. And the Statistics Korea operates the Statistical Training Institute (2 divisions), Statistics Research Institute (3 divisions), 5 Local Statistical Offices and 49 Local Branch Offices.
    Feb. 2008 According to the revision of "Government Organization Act", agriculture and fishery statistics production work was transferred from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries. Therefore, the Agriculture and Fisheries Production Statistics Division was newly founded. The Statistics Korea consists of 1 office, 5 bureaus, 4 officers, 23 divisions and 7 teams in the headquarters. And the Statistics Korea has the Statistical Training Institute (2 divisions), Statistics Research Institute (3 divisions), 12 Local Statistics Offices and 65 Local Branch Offices.
    Nov. 2007 The Employment Statistics Team was renamed the Employment Statistics Division. The Statistics Korea consists of 1 office, 4 bureaus, 5 officers, 22 divisions and 1 unit in the headquarters. And the Statistics Korea has the Statistical Training Institute (2 divisions), Statistics Research Institute (3 divisions), 12 Local Statistics Offices and 35 Local Branch Offices.
    Feb. 2007 The Employment Statistics Team was renamed the Employment Statistics Division. The Statistics Korea consists of 1 office, 4 bureaus, 5 officers, 22 divisions and 1 unit in the headquarters. And the Statistics Korea has the Statistical Training Institute (2 divisions), Statistics Research Institute (3 divisions), 12 Local Statistics Offices and 35 Local Branch Offices.
    Jan. 2007 The Statistics Research Institute was designated as an organization taking charge of itself. The Statistics Korea has 1 office, 4 bureaus, 5 officers, 21 divisions, 1 team and 1 unit in the headquarters. And the Statistics Korea has the Statistical Training Institute (2 divisions), Statistics Research Institute (3 divisions), 12 Local Statistics Offices and 35 Local Branch Offices.
    Jul. 01, 2006 The Statistics Korea founded the Statistics Research Institute to develop and supply new statistics, and established the Audit & Inspection Officer to reinforce auditing function. And the Statistics Korea introduced the high-ranking official pool.
    Jul. 22, 2005 The NSO1) was upgraded to the deputy ministerial level. The 4th graded local branch offices were renamed the Local Statistics Offices with a view to continuing innovation works of national statistics and reinforcing the functions such as mid-term financial planning, coordination & quality management of national statistics, and support of regional statistics. The NSO1) had 1 office, 4 bureaus, 3 officers, 20 divisions, 3 teams and 1 unit in the headquarters. And the NSO1) had 1 training institute (2 divisions), 12 local statistics offices and 35 sub-local branch offices.
    Jul. 01, 2005 The NSO 1) reinforced the functions related to statistical policies, statistical geographic information and supporting the development of regional statistics for the purpose of reinforcing national statistical infrastructure and reforming statistical activities. (4 bureaus, 20 divisions, 2 teams and 1 unit in the headquarters) And the NSO1) had 1 training institute (2 divisions), 12 local statistics offices and 35 sub-local branch offices.
    Jan. 01, 2005 The Statistical Training Institute was newly set up aiming at training NSO1) personnel on innovation works and nurturing statistical experts. The Statistical Training Institute consisted of the Training Planning Division and Training Management Division. (4 bureaus, 20 divisions, 1 training institute, 12 local statistics offices and 35 sub-local branch offices)
    Mar. 22, 2004 The Reform & Personnel Division was newly established within the Statistical Planning Bureau and the Planning Division was abolished.
    Mar. 04, 2004 The Statistical Research & Development Division (15 officials) was newly established within the Statistical Planning Bureau, and the International Statistics Division was renamed the International Statistical Cooperation Division. (4 bureaus, 20 divisions, 12 local statistics offices and 35 sub-local branch offices)
    Dec. 30, 2002 Transferred the production of fishery statistics to Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries
    Dec. 30, 2000 Designated Chungnam Statistics Office as the organization in charge of operation
    Feb. 28, 2000 Able to appoint Bureau Director of Statistical Information Service Bureau on contract

    May 24, 1999 The Division of Statistical Development in the Bureau of Statistical Planning was abolished. The Division of Service Industry Statistics was newly established within the Bureau of Economic Statistics, and the Division of Trade & Price Statistics was renamed as the Division of Price Statistics. (4 bureaus, 19 divisions, 12 local statistics offices and 35 sub-local branch offices)
    Jan. 01, 1999 The Statistical Training Center was abolished. The Division of Statistical Research was renamed as the Division of Statistical Development and transferred to the Bureau of Statistical Planning. (4 bureaus, 19 divisions, 12 local statistics offices and 35 sub-local branch offices)
    Jul. 01, 1998 National Statistical Office
    • The Division of Agricultural & Fishery Statistics was newly made inside the Bureau of Social Statistics and 26 branch offices were newly launched.
    Feb. 28, 1998 The Bureau of Statistical Survey was divided into 2 Bureaus of Economical Statistics and Social Statistics. The Bureau of Data Management was renamed as the Bureau of Statistical Information, and the Division of Application Development was newly established. Meanwhile the position of Computing Administrator was abolished. (4 bureaus, 1 training center, 20 divisions, 12 local statistics offices and 35 sub-local branch offices)
    Sep. 24, 1996 The Statistical Examiner was newly made and the Division of Population Statistics was divided into 2 Divisions of Population Census and Vital Statistics. Also, the Division of Statistical Research was newly established in the Statistical Training Center. The Divisions of General Affairs and Educational Affairs were integrated into the Division of Statistical Affairs in the Statistical Training Center. (3 bureaus, 1 inquiry commissioner, 1 statistical training center, 18 divisions, 1 administrator, 12 local statistics offices and 9 sub-local branch offices)

    • On the 16th of December 1963, the Bureau of Statistics was renamed as the National Bureau of Statistics (NBOS). At the same time, the NBOS - now as an external bureau of the EPB - was restructured into the 4 Divisions of Statistical Planning, Statistical Standards, Population Statistics, and Economic Statistics.

    • The Bureau of Statistics was relocated to the EPB from the Ministry of Home Affairs. On the 29th of June 1962, the Division of Survey and Analysis was newly established

    • The organization of the Bureau was reshuffled into 3 Divisions of Planning, Population Census and Vital Statistics (400 officials).
    Nov. 06, 1948 Bureau of Statistics, Government Information Agency
    • The Bureau was composed of 1,000 officials in one office and 4 divisions such as General Affairs, Planning, Population Census and Vital Statistics Division.
    • Presidential decree No. 39 of 『the 1st Population Census Enforcement Ordinance』on the 13th of Dec. 1948 was the first official order for statistical policy.
