Propensity to consume

Definition
  • Propensity to consume = Consumption expenditure / Disposable income x 100
  • Consumption expenditure: All expenditures spent on purchasing goods and services needed in daily living of members of a household. It consists of 'Food and non-alcoholic beverages', 'Alcoholic beverages and tobacco', 'Clothing and footwear', 'Housing, water, electricity and other fuels', 'Furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance', 'Health', 'Transport', 'Communication', 'Recreation and culture', 'Education', 'Restaurants and hotels' and 'Miscellaneous good and services'.
Commentary
  • An index showing the proportion of disposable income excluding non-consumption expenditure such as taxes and pension. It is expressed as consumption expenditure divided by disposable income.
