Infant mortality rate

Definition
  • It is the number of deaths of infants under one year old (under 365 days) in a given year divided by the number of the total births in the same year. It is often expressed as per 1,000 live births.
Commentary
  • The infant mortality rate decreases as the level of health increases. Therefore, this rate is often used as an indicator of the level of health in a country.
